scooterfix “new to you” giveaway 1: lightweight top case / scooter trunk

Cara's top caseUp for grabs is a small, black, light weight top case. You know the drill - if you are interested in receiving this item for free, leave a creative comment about why you would like to have the top case. The deadline for comments is Friday, May 23, 2008.

The top case measures approximately 13″ long X 10″ wide X 9″ deep. It is not a super sturdy case, but it does lock. Unfortunately I cannot find the mounting bars or hardware because I never used them. Hey, at least I found the keys. With a little creativity and ingenuity, mounting the case might not be too hard. Of course if I locate the mounting bars and hardware, I will ship them

Just like previous giveaways (this is the first on scooterfix, but there were nine on girlbike.com), there are no strings attached, just leave a comment on this post telling us why you’d like to be the recipient of the giveaway. Shipping is free to U.S. addresses only. You’ll have to wait to have your comment approved if you’ve never left a comment here before (to prevent spam comments). We’ll pick the winner after Friday, May 23, and post the lucky person’s name here within a day or so. Then you’ll need to send us your mailing address (don’t post it in the comment). If we don’t hear from you by Monday, May 26, it goes to the next person. Good luck!

pump it: Oil change in a jiffy

Jabsco oil change pumpMy friend brought his Jabsco oil change pump over on his Vespa ET4 last weekend. He usually uses the pump for his boat, but we thought we’d give it a try on the scooters.

We lined up his bike and my Met with the pump in between the two bikes. He clamped the pump’s battery leads to the his Vespa’s battery terminals and we drained the oil out of the dipstick hole in the Met in about 15 seconds. We got all that oil out in no time and no mess. His oil took the same amount of time, meaning no time at all!

What a good idea to use a pump. The oil stays in the heavy duty plastic can, capacity 3.5 gallons, so disposal is not an immediate concern. The pump has a narrow hose that easily fits in the dipstick hole and it is long enough to reach for all the warmed up oil to get out. It is self priming and can run dry without damage, and the pump has its own on-off switch for good control of the process. Not noisy, either.

Normally we use it to perform oil changes on the boat’s diesel engine, which is very hard to reach and holds at least 4 quarts. This pump may have been over powered for the barely one quart of oil in our scooters, but it sure was effective.

Filling the correct amount of oil back into the dipstick hole was a cinch with a Blitz flow control on-off funnel/hose, and together we were done with both bikes carefully handled in under 15 minutes. This time I used Castrol 4 stroke motorcycle oil, 10W-40. I’ve usd regular automotive oil of the same weight in the past.

I was so pleased that this method left me with no cleanup, no oil disposal container and in a ready-to-ride mode in such little time. My bike was so happy it really tried hard to keep up with the big Vespa. If you resist messy oil changes and if you find that drain bolt is a nuisance to reach on the Met, this is a good method of oil draining to consider.

off the scooter: How I spent my Mother’s Day weekend

How did I spend my Mother’s day weekend?

Why, hiding in a bathtub from a tornado of course!

We went down to visit my parents this weekend, and what followed us there but an EF3 tornado…

They’d said on CNN that south Arkansas could be getting tornadoes popping up Saturday, but when I talked to my friend Lish on MSN and she said that they were right then seeing footage of a funnel cloud dropping and jumping into a cloud right over our other friend,  Jenn’s, neighborhood, I kind of assumed that the majority of the nastiness had gone north of us. Little did I know that right at that moment there was a tornado forming just up the road.

The sirens went off in Stuttgart about 8ish, and that was odd because it wasn’t even raining yet. So I grabbed Nicky, and we went directly to the bathtub. Then my dad came in and told us that it was actually still about 20 minutes out. Since the toddler didn’t understand the need for sitting in the bathtub without even any water to play in and a bunch of pillows, we abandoned that idea until it got closer. My pregnant hip, which hurts so much I can barely walk, didn’t get it either!

Just as predicted about 20 minutes later, the sirens started going off again and the rain and wind started. So back into the tub we went. I made Nicky get inside my shirt with me. He thought that was pretty darn amusing at first, but then got really mad about being trapped. I’ve just heard too many stories about mommy’s having their babies ripped out of their arms by tornadoes, and I didn’t have the Ergo carrier to strap him to me. The power started blinking and then went out completely. The tornado’s actual passing by didn’t last long. There were a few minutes of horrible wind and what sound like hail but was more likely debris slamming against the roof. The whirly bird (or whatever you call that vent thing on the roof that lets hot air out) sounded like it was about to be ripped off. Then everything went deadly silent for like a minute before it started up again. I guess it didn’t take much more than ten or fifteen minutes for it to pass by completely.

It’s so strange. For some reason, I would have thought there would have been much more thunder and lightening involved. Aside from wind and debris, there wasn’t just a lot of noise from it. My dad commented that he kept thinking there would be that freight train noise they always talk about, but there was just a loud whistling sound.

When we came out every Bradford Pear tree on the street was just shattered. It looked like a bunch of firewood. Poor trees. And Daddy’s big pecan tree was completely uprooted. Most of the houses in the neighborhood had lost shingles, a lot had lost privacy fences, and a house three doors down had part of its roof torn off. The whole place stank of natural gas. Someone’s meter must have gotten ripped off the wall.

Over the course of the next couple of hours, we found out that one of the buildings that is part of my mom’s campus had a wall ripped off of it and a the main building had a plate glass window into the lobby completely shattered . The neighbors parents’ house (thank goodness they were out of town) was almost completely demolished. It’s so sad cause they just bought it three months ago and had just finished doing a bunch of remodeling! Also another of their friends’ house is now missing its entire second story. They were also out of town. Isn’t that crazy but wonderful!?
The power didn’t come back on at all last night, likely due to the fact that like 25% of the power polls were down in town. They still don’t have power last I heard. At least my parents are close to the power company’s headquarters so surely they’ll get it back pretty soon. In the rest of the town I can’t even imagine how long it will take. It got soooo hot in that house last night. Modern houses are NOT meant to be without air conditioning!

So I got up about 5:45 and went to look outside. However, the darn baby safe thing we put on the door into the sun room would NOT come off. I could feel the cool air coming in, and I turned into one of those puppies who puts his nose to the door and tries to suck in the fresh air cause they want outside. What? My dogs do that! Don’t yours? So I finally resorting to cutting the dang thing off the door. It was sooo cool outside that I swear I almost squealed with glee.

pregnant woman+hot house+sleeping=very bad deal

I think I must have managed to wake up the entire rest of the house with my antics, because by 6:15 everyone was out of bed except Nicky. That is somewhat of a feat when my hubby is in a house. ;)

So since we were up we just got the heck outta dodge so that my parents could deal with all the stuff that needed to be cleaned up at Mom’s school. Since she is the vice-chancellor she gets to deal with the organization efforts for cleaning up that kind of mess. Seeing her working her booty off at midnight and then six in the morning made me glad I am a peon. She’s pretty darn amazing.

It took a little bit of doing to get out of town because there were so many power lines down. This being one of them…

No, I didn’t zoom in… That is the view that was directly out of my car window. It was almost touching the car! Don’t worry it wasn’t live.

This is what the majority of the rest of the lines looked like…

And this is what the bad spots looked like…

So all and all the fact that there were no fatalities was pretty much a miracle!

So that’s how I spent my Mother’s Day weekend… How about y’all?

leopard to the extreme

Leopard Extreme

A lot of my scooter seat cover customers send me photos of their scooters dressed up in their new covers, and sometimes they send along photos of themselves with their scooters. Constance’s photos were just a little different than most. I made her this Vino scooter seat cover with a mixed leopard print and red piping to match her Powertrip jacket, but I wasn’t expecting her leopard-to-the-extreme look. I’ve seen helmet covers before, but never anything like this.

SkullSkinsI asked if she minded that I posted her photos over here, and about her startling choice for a helmet cover. She got it from SkullSkins.net (warning - this site can take awhile to load), and she’s considering also purchasing the one of the girl face with the big eyes.

I asked her how people responded. She wrote:

“People’s reaction is all the same for my helmet, a quick look as they walk in front of me or pull up beside me then a double-take and stare! I sent the picture to a friend and she didn’t realize it was my helmet and thought I had photoshopped the head on.”

Visibility is cut by about five percent, according to the web site. I’m wary about putting anything in front of my face that might block my view (and in some states, it may be illegal, so check with local ordinances), but Constance says it’s like looking through a screen door, and it works well for cutting sun glare. Of course, the skin can be worn without putting a sticker on the shield and still have a dramatic effect. Designs range from skull faces to making your head look like a basketball. Custom designs are also available. Matching mesh cuttouts are available for headlights, goggles or sunglasses.

what’s black and white and Super all over?

Vespa GTS 300 SuperWhat’s black and white and Super all over? The next big thing from Vespa just might be the Vespa GTS 300 Super that was just announced in Italy this past week.

The GTS 300 Super is available in black or white and sports a 278cc engine. Various graphical details make the GTS 300 Super a bit different from the GTS 250 at first glance, such as the grills in the fenders, a piped seat, and the grill design on the horn cover.

As far as I could find, there’s no word on when it might make it to the US market.

Vermont scooter sales on the rise…

… just like everywhere else. There was a feature in today’s Burlington Free Press that interviews the owner of the new (and only) Vespa dealership in Vermont, as well as Kevin Montanaro (founder of the Vermont Scooter Club), and your’s truly. Here’s the article.

pink helmet of the day: Icon Airframe Regal

I just found the Icon Airframe Regal Helmet over at MotoSport this morning, and if Icon helmets fit my head, I’d add this one to my wish list. Also comes in a black and red “goth” version (the pink is called “lace”).

Not a scooter, not a motorcycle, not even an MP3: a Spyder

BRP Can-Am Spyder

Piaggio MP3It’s not a scooter, but I still have to write about it because I’ve been seeing someone riding one of these up and down the road in front of my house. Each time I didn’t have my camera handy, so that’s why you’re getting the catalog photo above. I found out it’s a BRP Can-Am Spyder, from the makers of Ski-Doo. The first thing you’ll notice if you’re from a snowy state like I am is how much the Sypder looks like a snowmobile. Scooter folks may also note a resemblance to the Piaggio MP3 shown here on the left, but other than each having three wheels, they seem to have more differences than similarities.

Unlike the MP3, the Spyder steers rather than leans - if you ride a snowmobile or ATV, this will be familiar, but those of us who are used to countersteering, that means a whole new way of driving. Weighing in at 697 pounds, it’s powered by a 990 V-Twin engine, and has a reverse gear. Read more about it on the official BRP Can-Am Spyder Roadster web site.

Here’s a few YouTube videos to give you an idea of it in motion: Throttle Jockey: 2008 BRP Can-Am Spyder | Can-Am Spyder Roadster: Innovative Design and Engineering (appears to be a BRP video) | BRP Bombardier Can Am Spyder roadster Tricycle (in French)

pink helmet of the day - TMS Pink Rubber Floral

TMS Pink FloralYou’re probably wondering the same thing I am - what’s up with a “rubber” helmet? Well, I have no idea. I was perusing ebay and came across the TMS Pink Rubber Floral helmet from T Motorsports. It’s hard to miss it’s colorful design, and just as difficult to pass up the $24.95 price tag. The seller also puts some up for auction with a starting bid of 99 cents.

I tried to find reviews, but couldn’t find any. This is what the seller says: “Coated in the new RUBBERIZED soft-touch finish, UV protected, light weight durable composite shell, heavily cushioned and very comfortable interior, removable and washable padding, quick release fastening system, DOT approved new in box with flip-up visor and cloth bag, well vented all purpose product for summer or winter riding.”

scooters and sushi - two of my favorite things

Miso PrettyWhen I get a chance to combine scootering with one of my other favoritest things - eating - then why should I resist it?

I happened upon these Miso Pretty sushi dishes over at Merch-Bot.com, and they are on sale for a measly $4.95 a piece. I also found them at Blue Q for $4.99, directly from the folks that own the Miso Pretty brand. Blue Q also offers a Miso Pretty Vespa t-shirt for $23.99.

The Miso Pretty sushi trays are made of food-grade melamine. Even if you don’t like sushi, you can still use them for food you actually do like, such as a cookie or bologna sandwich, or use it as a key or coin tray. Cheap enough to buy for all your scooter friends.

pink helmet of the day - Zamp FJ-2

iconiconI’ve never heard of the brand name Zamp, but I did find a Zamp helmet review over at WebBikeWorld that explains that “Zamp distributes a limited number of helmet models in the U.S….” and “Kawasaki is one of the U.S. distributors for Zamp helmets,” so they may be found at your local Kawasaki dealer if you want to try one out.

The Zamp FJ-2icon is the only full-face model street helmet I’ve been able to find made by the company, and luckily, it comes in pink. It also comes with a very comfortable price tag at $89.99 (Motorcycle Superstore sells it for $80.99).
